Description

  • Develop rigorous methodologies and design legal research projects on climate change, environmental law, and emerging technologies.
  • Conduct independent legal research and analyses on legislation and regulation related to international climate and environment treaties and UNFCCC processes.
  • Produce and publish research papers, briefing materials, and policy analyses for partner governments and stakeholders.
  • Engage and build strategic partnerships with legislators, regulators, lawyers, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the change and sustainability policy space.
  • Communicate and present BCI research findings and insights at international conferences and high-level events, and draft speeches or deliver presentations (Principal/Senior roles).
  • Collaborate with Members of the Regulatory Reform Working Group and work under the guidance of the Head of Legal Research.
  • Manage project timelines, meet tight deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively to drive projects forward.
  • Provide research support on topics around legislation or regulation regarding international climate and environment-related frameworks.

Requirements

  • This is a voluntary, unpaid role with a standard time commitment of approximately one day per week, flexibly scheduled.
  • Degree in law is required.
  • Master’s degree in International Environmental Law, Climate Policy, or Information Technology Law is highly desirable.
  • Candidates must be legal scholars or experienced legal researchers (position limited to Legal Scholars and experienced Legal Researchers).
  • Proven ability to conduct academic research in international environmental law, climate change policy, and/or Internet/Technology law (desirable).
  • Experience designing, planning, and facilitating independent research projects and the ability to meet tight deadlines; proven ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships and communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong knowledge of: big data (security), climate change, UNFCCC processes, and public international laws related to climate change and the environment.
  • Basic understanding of distributed ledger technology, token economy, smart contracts, and crypto-assets.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal research databases such as Lexis Nexis, and familiarity with academic/referencing tools such as Mendeley; fluency in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish is desirable; law firm/start-up experience is a plus.
