Description

  • Ship, architect, build, and own end-to-end autonomous agents and agentic workflows that deliver business value at scale.
  • Design agent orchestration systems, including planning, tool use, memory, evaluation, and multi-agent coordination.
  • Integrate and optimize frontier LLMs within agent architectures, including model selection, prompt engineering, retrieval strategies, and fine-tuning decisions.
  • Drive deeper model optimization work such as fine-tuning, distillation, and RLHF when it improves capability or efficiency.
  • Lead technical planning by breaking ambitious goals into sequenced tasks with clear ownership and execution paths.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance through code review, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
  • Partner with technical and non-technical stakeholders to translate business objectives into agent-powered product experiences.
  • Evaluate emerging AI capabilities and make tradeoffs across performance, latency, cost, and user experience.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, rapid experimentation, and learning across the team.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering or machine learning.
  • Recent professional experience building autonomous agents or agentic workflows in production.
  • Deep experience with agentic systems, including context management, planning, tool use, memory, evaluation, and multi-step reasoning.
  • Hands-on experience bringing frontier LLM capabilities into production products.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and model optimization.
  • Track record of taking AI-powered products from zero to scale in fast-paced, product-driven environments.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to write production-quality code.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and shaping technical direction within teams.
  • Product-minded engineering approach focused on user outcomes.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills across engineering, product, and design.
  • Comfort operating in extreme ambiguity in a rapidly evolving domain.
  • Alignment with Block's mission of economic empowerment and creating access and opportunity.
  • Preferred: experience at leading AI organizations translating research into production agent systems.
  • Preferred: background building or scaling agentic products at startups, including early-stage or pivoting companies.
  • Preferred: experience with model fine-tuning, distillation, or RLHF.
  • Preferred: familiarity with agent evaluation, safety, and alignment challenges in production contexts.
