Description

  • Create optical mechanisms such as focus systems, shutters, and filter wheels for space payloads.
  • Review literature and parallel applications to inform architecture and component selection.
  • Run hand calculations to size actuators and other components.
  • Select, procure, and rigorously test actuators and sensors for environmental and accelerated life conditions.
  • Architect test plans, oversee test setup development, characterize performance, and report findings to support integration decisions.
  • Own hardware design from concept through launch while managing design maturity across the program.
  • Use first principles to simplify designs and guide technical decisions.
  • Communicate tradeoffs in system architecture related to mechanism design and performance.
  • Lead subsystem design reviews and provide clear status updates on timeline and technical progress.
  • Build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful designs into flight hardware and low-rate production.
  • Create technical documentation including presentations, test plans and reports, procedures, drawings, and specifications.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • BS or higher degree in engineering or a hard science.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
  • 5+ years of mechanism design experience with space hardware and a demonstrated track record of fielding flight hardware.
  • Mechatronics experience, including reviewing datasheets, selecting components, interfacing with actuators and sensors, prototyping control loops, and integrating into mechanical/electrical assemblies.
  • Coding experience in Python, MATLAB, or C++ for analytical models and data acquisition/automation.
  • Experience using microcontrollers for prototyping such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, STM, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with high-reliability design, athermalization, and vibration/shock resistance.
  • Experience with mechanical alignments, kinematic mounting, and qualification test campaigns.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with a highly motivated, self-starting, and autonomous work style.
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to define scope and requirements for ambiguous problems.
  • Hands-on technical project experience, including academic, extracurricular, or personal projects.
  • Experience in related industries is preferred.
  • Structural or thermal testing experience is preferred.
  • CAD proficiency and ability to create engineering drawings meeting industry standards is preferred.
  • Hands-on fabrication and assembly skills with hand tools, mill, lathe, or similar equipment are preferred.
  • Strong fundamentals in optics, heat transfer, statics, solid mechanics, and materials are preferred.
