Description

  • Lead the design, construction, and testing of UAS prototypes to turn concepts into functional early-stage products.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, control systems, and electronic components onto unmanned vehicles and ensure seamless hardware–software communication.
  • Rapidly prototype hardware using methods such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and composite fabrication and iterate designs based on test results.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and systems engineers to prototype and test new hardware and software solutions for autonomy systems.
  • Develop and execute test plans, conduct feasibility studies, run simulations, and perform performance evaluations to optimize hardware designs.
  • Operate, test, and demonstrate small UAS during developmental testing and surrogate vehicle experiments.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and implement solutions for hardware and integration issues discovered during development and testing.
  • Document design processes, test results, and maintain detailed engineering records to support evaluation and iteration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
  • In-depth knowledge of open source autopilot systems and the ArduPilot stack, including integration, configuration, customization, and testing of unmanned vehicles.
  • Practical experience in operation, testing, and development of small UAS or drones, including hands-on flying, maintenance, or troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated application of fundamentals in aerodynamics, flight performance, structures, electrical systems, and GNC (guidance, navigation, and control).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools and methods such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and working with composite materials.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the National Airspace System and UAS operating regulations; willingness and ability to travel as necessary for project planning, testing, and execution.
  • Proficiency with computers, strong documentation skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and the ability to work both independently and in teams.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours as required by project demands and eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
  • Preferred: advanced degree in engineering/robotics/computer science or related field; knowledge of software development practices and languages relevant to autonomy (e.g., Python, C++, ROS); FAA Part 107 certification.
