Description

  • Plan, prepare, and execute UAS missions in VLOS and BVLOS scenarios while meeting mission and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as Safety Pilot during manual flight operations for fixed-wing and fixed-wing VTOL UAS in complex multi-UAS operations.
  • Perform pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks and diagnostics on UAS platforms and ground control systems.
  • Operate, configure, troubleshoot, and manage Pixhawk and Cube Orange flight controllers, including firmware, parameters, and mission planning software.
  • Develop mission-specific risk assessments and apply Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) principles for UK CAA Specific Category operations.
  • Maintain accurate flight logs, technical records, incident reports, and other required operational documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, flight test, and project teams to improve UAS performance and operational procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with UK CAA regulations, including operational authorisations and permits for Specific Category operations.
  • Provide technical support and basic field maintenance or fault rectification to keep UAS platforms operational.
  • Mentor and train less experienced operators while helping develop safe systems of work and a strong safety culture.

Requirements

  • Valid UK CAA General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC).
  • Significant experience operating manual UAS or RC aircraft on fixed-wing and fixed-wing VTOL airframes.
  • Demonstrable experience planning and executing UAS operations within the UK CAA Specific Category.
  • Practical BVLOS operations experience, including approvals or experience within an organisation holding BVLOS permissions.
  • Strong understanding of UK CAA Specific Category operations, including Operational Safety Cases and operational authorisation processes.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Pixhawk and Cube Orange flight controllers, including integration, setup, configuration, troubleshooting, and operation.
  • Meticulous documentation and record-keeping experience, including aviation paperwork.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, and travel extensively, potentially 25-50% of the time.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain UK Security Check (SC) clearance or higher.
  • Understanding and experience with UK MAA UAS operations, including S1 or S2 category, is preferred.
  • UK MAA Evaluator Aircrew or other trials qualification is preferred.
  • Experience with fixed-wing VTOL UAS operations and multiple-air vehicle operations is preferred.
  • 5 years’ experience as a manual Safety Pilot for FW/MR UAS is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of rotary and fixed-wing UAS aerodynamics, flight dynamics, and system architectures is preferred.
  • Experience with other flight controllers, ground control stations, or payloads such as LiDAR or advanced EO/IR sensors is preferred.
  • Background in aviation maintenance, electronics, or robotics is preferred.
  • Experience operating UAS in challenging environments such as maritime, mountainous, or urban settings is preferred.
  • Technical qualification such as HNC/HND, apprenticeship, or similar in electronics, avionics, mechanical engineering, or a related field is preferred.
