Description

  • Map BM units to power plants, substations, and fuel types using API data, public registers, and manual research.
  • Map substations to ETYS zones and grid supply points.
  • Build and maintain reference and master datasets linking identifiers across Elexon, National Grid ESO, the TEC register, and other sources.
  • Document mappings, assumptions, and known limitations for downstream users.
  • Reconcile legacy data formats with current schemas and granularities.
  • Investigate and resolve inconsistencies between Elexon message types such as BOALF, BOD, and DISBSAD.
  • Identify authoritative values when data sources disagree and explain the reasoning behind decisions.
  • Clean time-series data by detecting outliers, filling gaps, and resolving overlapping or duplicate timestamps.
  • Develop reusable Python-based data cleaning routines for repeated use across datasets.
  • Write and maintain Python data grabbers, build dbt models, orchestrate workflows with GitHub Actions, and design PostgreSQL schemas.

Requirements

  • Strong Python skills for data work, including fluency with pandas and the ability to write clean, testable, reusable code.
  • Solid SQL skills, including complex queries, window functions, and CTEs in PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with messy, real-world data such as reconciliation, cleaning, or mapping work.
  • Methodical and detail-oriented approach with the ability to identify inconsistencies and investigate root causes.
  • Strong documentation habits and an understanding that undocumented mappings and assumptions create technical debt.
  • Ability to work independently, own ambiguous problems, conduct research, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Experience with energy, utilities, or market data, preferably in any geography.
  • Familiarity with UK energy markets, Elexon data, or grid operations.
  • dbt experience for transformation pipelines.
  • Exposure to time-series data challenges such as irregular timestamps, gaps, and restatements.
  • Experience building software using agentic AI coding systems is highly desirable.
