Description

  • Lead the architecture and design of complex biotech consumables, including injection molded plastics, over-molding, LSR, and assembly methods such as ultrasonic welding and laser bonding.
  • Develop fluidic and microfluidic systems and ensure seamless integration between consumable cartridges and permanent instrument hardware.
  • Use FEA, tolerance analysis, and CFD to predict part behavior and improve performance under laboratory operating conditions.
  • Design products for compliance with ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820, and RUO requirements, and contribute to Design History Files.
  • Own critical subsystems from early concept through high-volume manufacturing.
  • Champion Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly in partnership with toolmakers and CMOs.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for external molding partners and material suppliers.
  • Identify patentable innovations in fluid handling, sealing technologies, and consumable-to-instrument interfaces.
  • Lead failure analysis and implement permanent corrective actions for plastic component issues.
  • Mentor junior engineers and act as the mechanical representative on cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of mechanical design experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in medical devices or biotech consumables.
  • Deep knowledge of thermoplastic resins including COC, COP, PC, and PP, as well as elastomers such as TPE and TPU.
  • Experience with high-volume injection molding.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Creo.
  • Experience with PDM systems and simulation suites.
  • Familiarity with risk management standards and methods including ISO 14971, FMEA, and Gage R&R.
  • Experience with advanced failure analysis methods such as FEA and SEM is preferred.
  • Experience with biotech consumables, fluidics, or microfluidics is preferred.
