Description

  • Oversee vendor use across end-to-end publishing workflows to ensure an efficient, joined-up operating model.
  • Drive continuous improvement by reducing departmental silos and expanding cross-functional vendor scope.
  • Manage vendor contract renewals, including tracking end dates, negotiating terms, and coordinating legal review.
  • Lead and support RFP processes, including supplier shortlisting, proposal review, interviews, and supplier selection.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for vendors during procurement, contracting, onboarding, and renewal activities.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to define tasks, volumes, SLAs, KPIs, and forecasting needs tied to submission and publication volume.
  • Develop supplier-side headcount and budget forecasts and support negotiations to finalize resourcing and costs.
  • Establish and maintain auditing and quality assurance frameworks to monitor vendor performance and SLA adherence.
  • Share audit results with vendors, support remediation plans, and escalate contract breaches when needed.
  • Build vendor management best practices, lead staff training, and support site visits and cross-functional alignment on tools and technologies.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience developing and maintaining productive relationships with editorial and/or publishing services providers.
  • Experience sourcing vendors and managing RFI/RFP processes and onboarding.
  • Experience drafting and enforcing SLAs, auditing vendor KPIs, and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple vendors across global time zones and high-volume journal portfolios.
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end publishing workflows, including submission, peer review, production, copyediting, typesetting, and online publication.
  • Familiarity with publishing standards such as JATS XML, DOI registration, and ORCID integration.
  • Knowledge of ethical publishing guidelines such as COPE and ICMJE, plus compliance issues including data privacy and accessibility.
  • Familiarity with manuscript tracking systems, production platforms, and content management systems, such as Editorial Manager.
  • Experience with data tracking and reporting tools such as Tableau.
  • Advanced degree or certifications in procurement, operations, or project management is a plus.
  • Ability to work across time zones, with some national and international travel required.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $75,000-$83,000 in the US or £50,000-£54,000 in the UK.
  • Fully remote/home-based work environment.
