Description

  • Design and implement logical and physical data models for new application features.
  • Author and review stored procedures, functions, views, triggers, and complex SQL queries across relational databases.
  • Collaborate with software engineers through the full development lifecycle to align database design with application requirements and performance targets.
  • Define and enforce database coding standards, naming conventions, and schema change management practices.
  • Build and maintain schema migration scripts and manage versioned deployments through CI/CD pipelines.
  • Profile and tune slow queries, identify missing indexes, and resolve locking and blocking issues.
  • Analyze execution plans and implement query rewrites, index strategies, and statistics management to meet SLA requirements.
  • Establish performance baselines and monitor database health metrics to proactively address bottlenecks.
  • Support cloud-hosted database environments and assist with migrations from on-premises platforms to the cloud.
  • Partner with DBAs, data engineers, and solution architects on broader data platform and enterprise architecture initiatives.

Requirements

  • Expert-level SQL proficiency across at least one major RDBMS such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MySQL/MariaDB.
  • Working knowledge of a second relational database platform is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with database performance tuning, including query analysis, index design, statistics, and execution plan interpretation.
  • Experience with schema versioning and database migration tooling such as Flyway, Liquibase, Alembic, or similar.
  • Proficiency in Python and terminal scripting such as PowerShell or Bash for automation, data loading, and operational tasks.
  • Working knowledge of cloud-managed database services such as Amazon RDS or Aurora.
  • Solid understanding of relational data modeling theory and schema design patterns for OLTP systems.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices, including Git, branching strategies, CI/CD integration, and environment promotion workflows.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in a development DBA, database developer, or data engineering role with strong SQL development responsibilities.
  • Experience supporting both OLTP and analytical workloads; exposure to data warehousing patterns such as star schema and slowly changing dimensions is a plus.
  • Prior consulting or client-services experience is preferred.
  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a Public Trust suitability determination are required.
  • Experience in federal data environments, government IT modernization, or regulated industries with data governance requirements is preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to engineering and non-technical stakeholders.
