Description

  • Design, build, and operate platforms, tooling, and infrastructure for research and data science enablement systems.
  • Work across the stack on full-stack applications, backend systems, data pipelines, AI integrations, and related infrastructure.
  • Build end-to-end systems that process large-scale datasets reliably and cost-effectively.
  • Create intuitive interfaces that make sophisticated analysis accessible to non-technical users such as journalists, organizers, and decision-makers.
  • Turn manual, time-intensive workflows into fast, scalable, automated processes.
  • Prototype and evaluate emerging technologies, including AI/ML, for research and development challenges.
  • Provide technical guidance to research and data science stakeholders on feasibility, solution options, and tradeoffs.
  • Produce technical documentation such as design docs, architecture decisions, and runbooks.
  • Collaborate across Research, Data Science, Product, and Growth to align on design approaches and delivery.
  • Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, uphold code quality and testing standards, and improve team processes and tooling.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience building data-intensive systems and tooling in production environments.
  • Strong architectural judgment with experience balancing scalability, reliability, cost, and maintainability across multiple services or components.
  • Strong Python programming skills plus proficiency in at least one other language such as JavaScript, Java, Go, or Scala.
  • Experience designing and building APIs, data models, and system integrations for complex, evolving requirements.
  • Experience building and operating production data pipelines using workflow orchestration tools such as Dagster, Airflow, or similar systems.
  • Proven ability to drive complex projects end-to-end with limited direction, including scoping, planning, coordinating, and delivering.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, and infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or CDK.
  • Strong product sense for internal tools and the ability to identify user pain points and improve productivity.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Passion for civic tech, social impact, or grassroots organizing and interest in building tools that empower organizers and communities.
  • Preferred: Experience building features powered by LLMs or using LLM evaluation frameworks.
  • Preferred: Background working alongside researchers, data scientists, or analysts.
  • Preferred: Contributions to open source or published technical work.
  • Preferred: Experience with survey infrastructure, research tooling, or analytics platforms.
  • Preferred: Experience applying AI/ML techniques to survey, voter, political, or other data.
