Description

  • Administer and optimize Kong Gateway, including routes, services, plugins, certificates, rate limiting, and logging.
  • Build and extend Kong plugins and manage Kong in Kubernetes using Helm or operator patterns.
  • Define API standards, review API designs, and manage OpenAPI contracts, versioning, and governance.
  • Implement authentication and security patterns such as JWT, claims mapping, key rotation, and AD/LDAP integration.
  • Build and operate Kubernetes resources and manage AWS networking, compute, load balancing, DNS, and secrets.
  • Implement CI/CD and GitOps workflows, automated validation, and environment promotion.
  • Deliver observability through API metering, dashboards, logs, metrics, traces, and SLO reporting.
  • Troubleshoot Linux and container issues and support on-call operations with runbooks and documentation.
  • Mentor teams and help establish platform standards across multiple teams.

Requirements

  • Production experience administering Kong Gateway.
  • Experience building and extending Kong plugins with strong gateway policy knowledge.
  • Strong API design background and expert-level OpenAPI skills.
  • Experience with API governance, including linting, validation, contract testing, and semantic versioning.
  • Experience deploying and troubleshooting Kubernetes environments.
  • Experience with DevOps practices, including GitOps, CI/CD, and automation.
  • Authentication expertise with JWT and enterprise identity systems.
  • AWS platform experience is preferred.
  • Experience operating Kong at scale in multi-team or multi-tenant environments is preferred.
  • Experience with GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux is preferred.
  • Familiarity with service mesh and gateway technologies such as Envoy, NGINX, Istio is preferred.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Datadog, Splunk, Prometheus/Grafana, or ELK/OpenSearch is preferred.
  • Security experience with TLS/mTLS, secrets management, and OWASP API security is preferred.

  • Salary range of $135,000 to $160,000.
  • Opportunity to support the VA Lighthouse Program and work on mission-critical government data access.
