Description

  • Design computational biology problems that can be verified programmatically and require a specialized scientific tool.
  • Choose an anchor tool such as NEURON, Brian2, OpenSim, AMICI, MNE-Python, or similar packages to build tasks around.
  • Write Python reference solutions for each task.
  • Provide input files, model definitions, or network definitions when required.
  • Set the numerical target answer and define an appropriate tolerance for grading.
  • Test tasks in batches against the model and tune difficulty to achieve a 10–30% pass rate.
  • Adjust model parameters, stimulation protocols, channel kinetics, and solver tolerances to calibrate task difficulty.
  • Submit finalized tasks for senior review and incorporate feedback to improve quality.
  • Work on project-based assignments during active phases and complete tasks within estimated weekly time expectations.

Requirements

  • Degree in Biology or a related field.
  • 2+ years of research, applied, or teaching experience.
  • Python proficiency for writing reference solutions.
  • Fluency with, or strong willingness to independently learn, at least one scriptable computational biology package such as NEURON, Brian2, NEST, OpenSim, AMICI, libroadrunner, MNE-Python, or Biopython.
  • Ability to design problems that genuinely require a specialized solver.
  • Strong written English at C1 level or above.
  • Willingness to work on part-time, non-permanent, project-based assignments.
  • Ability to learn independently and get up to speed quickly on new tools.
  • Prior experience with the listed tools is not required if the candidate can ramp up on their own.
