Description

  • Spend about 80% of fellowship time on independent research.
  • Spend up to 20% of time assisting other fellows or contributing to broader IMI research programs.
  • Pursue high-risk, frontier research projects with the potential for major impact.
  • Analyze gaps in proposed projects and propose solutions or alternative approaches.
  • Produce code-backed research outputs suitable for publication when possible.
  • Prepare a final report or blog post if refereed publication goals are not met.
  • Participate in weekly 1:1 mentorship with senior researchers.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to do good self-directed research, supported by prior publications or equivalent evidence of impactful work.
  • Backgrounds from research labs, industry research, or self-directed engineering-to-research transitions are considered; pedigree and age are not factors.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work remotely from anywhere in the world except sanctioned jurisdictions.
  • Visa sponsorship is not provided.
  • Applicants must submit a brief bio or CV link, a topic of interest, relevant prior work, GitHub/Scholar/X links, desired start date, duration, and any other obligations.
  • Applicants must provide a brief analysis of one listed project, identifying gaps and explaining how they would solve them.
  • Alternatively, applicants may propose their own research idea and estimate the time and compute required.
  • Applications are considered in two cohorts with deadlines on April 1, 2026 and September 1, 2026.
  • Selection is based on novelty, importance, clarity of approach, feasibility, and alignment with the program’s topics.
  • Pre-employment screening is required, including third-party verification of work history, education, and identity, plus a final in-person interview and identity verification in the applicant’s country of residence.
