Description

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team across the design system and documentation platform.
  • Define and establish the engineering practice for the new Upstream Studios function.
  • Guide architecture and technical decisions for design system components, tokens, and patterns.
  • Own technical direction for the documentation site, including performance, reliability, infrastructure, and localization.
  • Advocate for engineering quality across technical debt, accessibility, customer issues, security, and platform reliability.
  • Collaborate with Product Design and Technical Writing to translate design and content needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Help engineers across GitLab understand the value of and contribute to the design system platform.
  • Shape contribution workflows that make it easier for the organization to participate in Pajamas.

Requirements

  • Experience leading infrastructure, platform, or development teams.
  • Track record of building high-performing, values-aligned teams.
  • Deep expertise in design systems, including design tokens, component architecture, accessibility standards, and contribution models.
  • Professional experience with Git, docs-as-code, Hugo, and accessibility.
  • Experience building and supporting multilingual sites and localization workflows at scale.
  • Professional experience with JavaScript, especially Vue.js.
  • Familiarity with Elasticsearch, Ruby/Go, AI tools, and CI/CD practices.
  • Strong experience running and scaling large consumer-grade platforms with a focus on reliability, security, performance, and scalability.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English for a remote, largely asynchronous work environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely about complex technical, architectural, or organizational problems.
  • Experience with performance and optimization problems, including diagnosing and preventing them.
  • Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process.
  • Passion for open source and developer tools, with commitment to GitLab’s values and inclusive, high-performance culture.

  • Base salary range of $195,000 to $240,000 USD for the listed U.S. level.
