Description

  • Provide technical stewardship and leadership for a dedicated 'Lab Squad', setting direction and standards for the initiative.
  • Architect and deploy membership features directly into the Vanilla stack to enable authenticated user journeys.
  • Balance maintenance of core PHP/Symfony services with development of modern React-based engagement tools.
  • Define, own, and drive the technical roadmap that converts anonymous users into members via engagement levers like 'Join the Club', newsletters, commenting, and polls.
  • Ensure system quality through emphasis on test coverage, automated testing, observability, alerting, and documentation.
  • Design for scalability and performance for high-traffic sites, including Varnish and edge caching strategies.
  • Manage containerized deployments and operations using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Integrate and operate workflow/orchestration solutions (e.g., Temporal.io or similar) where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with product, commercial, and engineering teams to translate business goals into deliverable technical plans.

Requirements

  • Deep experience with modern PHP (8.x) and the Symfony framework.
  • Strong experience with React and building interactive frontend components within a larger platform.
  • Proven track record managing high-traffic sites where Varnish and edge caching are critical.
  • Expertise with Docker and Kubernetes for containerized application management.
  • Experience with workflow/orchestration frameworks such as Temporal.io or similar.
  • Advocate for TDD/BDD and automated testing using tools like PHPUnit, Jest, and Cypress.
  • Demonstrable ability to translate complex business goals into clear technical roadmaps.
  • Experience leading engineering teams or acting as a technical lead/owner for a product area.
  • Familiarity with observability, alerting, and production documentation practices.
  • Ability to work remotely in the UK (role is UK remote-based).
