Description

  • Define future research directions and initiate new investigations into important AI trends.
  • Conduct research on frontier AI datacenters, AI supply chains, polling, benchmark analysis, earnings growth of AI companies, and AI models.
  • Write data insights, reports, and articles to communicate research findings.
  • Help create and maintain datasets related to AI.
  • Pitch and develop new research projects and prototype original ideas.
  • Make estimates and forecasts from limited information on compute, power supply, and future capabilities.
  • Evaluate technical claims such as benchmark scores, training costs, and algorithmic improvements for credibility.
  • Create new benchmarks and contribute to the development of brand-new evaluation methods.
  • Run benchmarks on frontier models and analyze results quantitatively and qualitatively.
  • Collaborate with researchers, analysts, and engineers to ensure evaluation outputs are accurate and integrated into publications.

Requirements

  • Experience with data analysis techniques such as bootstrapping, handling uncertainty, and regressions.
  • Prior research experience in one or more of GPU manufacturing and design, data centers, AI infrastructure, geospatial data analysis, AI governance, running surveys, forecasting, or sell-side analysis.
  • Prior research experience in at least one part of the AI development pipeline, such as hardware, datacenters, benchmarks, or AI research.
  • Prior research experience in quantitative or technical topics.
  • Familiarity with AI benchmarking is preferred.
  • Some coding experience is a plus, though not required.
  • Strong coding skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curiosity and the ability to learn quickly across diverse domains.
  • Comfort making quantitative estimates with limited information and reasoning clearly about uncertainty.
  • Familiarity with AI trends, including Epoch’s existing research.
  • Professional-level English proficiency.
  • Ability to work remotely, with preference for overlap with UTC-8 and UTC time zones.
  • Willingness to travel for three staff retreats per year is preferred.

  • Annual salary of $100,000 to $160,000 USD for Researchers and $150,000 to $250,000 USD for Senior Researchers, with higher pay possible for exceptional candidates.
