Description

  • Own the backend architecture for a new data-heavy product offering and make key technical decisions independently.
  • Design and implement reliable, scalable, and maintainable backend services.
  • Model, query, and optimize complex datasets in Postgres to support large-scale design data.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in data-intensive workflows under real customer load.
  • Collaborate closely with frontend developers to shape APIs and user-facing functionality.
  • Make pragmatic tradeoffs between speed of delivery and long-term scalability.
  • Establish patterns, standards, and documentation that future backend developers can build on.
  • Own systems end-to-end from design through production, including debugging and operational concerns.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of backend development experience in a production environment.
  • Strong experience with Python and relational databases (Postgres preferred).
  • Proven ability to design data models and optimize query performance for large datasets.
  • Experience building and maintaining APIs for data-heavy applications.
  • Experience writing robust unit tests and delivering production-quality code.
  • Comfortable owning systems end-to-end and making autonomous technical decisions.
  • Able to work with ambiguity and move projects forward without tightly defined specs.
  • Willingness to be the sole backend developer on a team and provide long-term technical ownership.
  • Eligible to work from anywhere in Canada (remote-first role).
