Description

  • Identify gaps in crypto-security infrastructure and drive cross-functional efforts to address them.
  • Perform security assessments, framework development, and threat modeling for blockchain protocols, smart contracts, and distributed ledger technologies.
  • Partner with software engineering teams to advise on code and architecture for internal smart contract development.
  • Partner with internal tooling teams to shape the roadmap and vision for Coinbase blockchain security tools.
  • Identify automation opportunities in tooling and processes, deliver proofs of concept, and write detailed technical requirements.
  • Investigate blockchain upgrades, protocol changes, and emerging innovations such as zero-knowledge proofs and new blockchain protocols.
  • Publish blogs and give internal and external talks on vulnerabilities, incident investigations, and integration risks.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of blockchains, particularly EVM chains, and a crypto-forward perspective.
  • 4+ years of experience in security engineering with significant focus on blockchain, distributed systems, or cryptographic infrastructure security.
  • Extensive experience in architecture and threat modeling for security-critical backend crypto systems.
  • Expertise in application security and cryptography, including signing schemes, hash functions, zero-knowledge proofs, and MPC.
  • Familiarity with onchain fundamentals such as blockchain explorers, funds tracing, bridging, DEXs, NFTs, and smart contracts.
  • Familiarity with recent innovations such as restaking and currently considered EIPs.
  • Ability to provide leadership and mentorship to coworkers.
  • Experience in a highly cross-functional role and/or leading a team.
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including translating complex security risks into actionable guidance for leadership.
  • Experience using AI/agentic tooling such as Claude Code, Cursor, and GPT Codex.
  • Ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots in daily workflows with human-in-the-loop practices.
  • Knowledge of the security architecture of non-EVM blockchains, preferred.
  • Deep understanding of cryptography such as zk-SNARKs, FHE, and MPC, preferred.
  • Experience with at least one of MongoDB, Snowflake, Databricks, or Dune, preferred.

  • Annual base salary range of $186,065 to $218,900 USD, excluding equity and bonus.
