Description

  • Lead legal research to identify underutilized or unused federal and state legal authorities for proactively addressing novel AGI-related risks.
  • Identify and analyze differentially exploitable gaps in the letter and practice of law to help prioritize defensive options.
  • Research and develop potential federal executive, legislative, and state-level policy interventions to address identified legal and policy gaps.
  • Analyze deficits in emergency preparedness and propose structural solutions for prevention, mitigation, and response.
  • Craft holistic solution recommendations across public health, civil rights, national security, infrastructure security, and related domains for projected novel crises.
  • Research realpolitik and judicial dynamics relevant to prospective interventions and likely implementation pathways.
  • Work closely with the Public Security Policy program lead and other CARMA teams to integrate scenario analysis into legal and policy recommendations.
  • Manage multiple concurrent research projects and deliverables with minimal supervision to meet deadlines.

Requirements

  • J.D. plus 3+ years of relevant experience in law, policy research, bill craft, or engagement, OR a master's in a relevant field plus 5+ years of legal research experience.
  • Proficiency with recent legal research information technologies.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: federal policymaking apparatuses, state-level policymaking apparatuses, judicial dynamics, policy research, policy analysis, policy strategy, lobbying, and drafting executive order or bill language.
  • Experience or familiarity with security- and crisis-related domains such as emergency preparedness, crisis management, catastrophic risk policy, CBRN+C, national security, counter-terrorism, public safety, or public order.
  • Strategic thinking experience, including multistage/multiprong strategies, futures studies or foresight methods, and consideration of unknown unknowns.
  • Experience working on, tracking, and successfully completing multiple concurrent tasks to meet deadlines with little supervision.
  • Willingness to collaborate with technical and geopolitical teams (CARMA’s AI risk assessment, offense/defense, and geostrategic teams) to inform legal recommendations.
  • Note: Deep technical AI knowledge or prior AI-specific policy experience is not necessarily required.

Benefits

  • $140,000 - $180,000 per year salary range
  • Salary plus benefits (described as “good benefits” in the posting)
  • Full-time, remote role (Washington, DC context noted)
  • Employee position available for candidates legally authorized to work in the U.S.; candidates outside the U.S. may be engaged as independent contractors on project-based work
