Description

  • Split time between leadership (≈50–60%) and hands-on technical work (≈40–50%), adjusting based on team needs.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of developers through hands-on collaboration, pair programming, and code reviews.
  • Write production-quality code for critical features, complex problems, and performance-sensitive areas of the codebase.
  • Architect technical solutions, prepare and review technical design documents (Pitches), and make key technical decisions.
  • Evaluate, implement, and establish best practices for AI tools adoption to improve team productivity while maintaining code ownership and security.
  • Remove blockers, shield the team from distractions, drive hiring decisions, and help build a world-class engineering team.
  • Establish and maintain development processes, CI/CD workflows, and practices that enable high-velocity, high-quality delivery.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, QA, and Design to ensure alignment on scope, priorities, and delivery timelines.
  • Optimize performance and scalability for millions of WordPress users and troubleshoot the most challenging technical issues directly.
  • Own team deliverables and deadlines, balance technical debt with feature delivery, and manage special projects end-to-end.

Requirements

  • 7+ years proven web development experience.
  • 3+ years hands-on engineering leadership while maintaining individual contributions.
  • 5+ years strong proficiency with modern PHP (7+/8+) and experience with Laravel or other modern PHP frameworks.
  • 4+ years extensive experience with WordPress plugin development and experience scaling WordPress for large user bases (preferred).
  • Expert-level understanding of JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, and CSS3.
  • Deep experience with MySQL, database optimization, and scaling strategies.
  • Mastery of software design patterns, SOLID principles, and clean architecture, with a track record of shipping production code in leadership roles.
  • Experience with Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, cloud platforms (AWS or Google Cloud), and containerization (Docker; Kubernetes preferred).
  • Strong experience with RESTful APIs, third-party integrations, and independent debugging of complex technical problems.
  • English at upper-intermediate level or higher; experience leading fully remote/distributed teams; availability for audio/video meetings between 9am and 5pm ET; personal computer with internet access.
  • Bonus / nice-to-have: experience with React, Vue.js, open-source or WordPress core contributions, microservices/distributed systems, SaaS/subscription platforms, integrating AI/ML features, and prior player-coach or team-building-from-scratch experience.
