Description

  • Define and implement VAEC-aligned architecture including networking, containers, integration, and security zone design.
  • Lead integration efforts across VistA, Cerner, CDW, and API-based systems to ensure interoperability.
  • Oversee data flow design, system boundaries, interoperability patterns, and data exchange approaches.
  • Guide ATO boundary definition, control inheritance strategy, and related compliance activities.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams across architecture and implementation tasks.
  • Design enterprise integration patterns (API gateway, event-driven, batch vs real-time) and promote best practices.
  • Translate and communicate architecture, tradeoffs, and technical designs to VA stakeholders and clinical teams.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability Determination; experience handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and following safeguarding/compliance requirements.
  • Cloud architecture experience on AWS including VPC, ECS/EKS, IAM, ELB, CloudWatch and multi-account strategies.
  • Containerization experience with Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift fundamentals.
  • Healthcare interoperability expertise with FHIR R4, CDS Hooks, SMART on FHIR and awareness of HL7.
  • Experience integrating or working with VistA, Cerner, CDW, and API-based health systems.
  • Data architecture skills including data flow modeling, schema design, data lineage, and normalization strategies.
  • Security architecture knowledge including Zero Trust concepts, network segmentation, encryption strategies, and RBAC.
  • Familiarity with RMF and NIST 800-53 controls, ATO boundary definition, and control inheritance models.
  • DevSecOps experience with CI/CD pipelines, artifact promotion, and environment separation.
  • Designing for performance and scalability: stateless services, horizontal scaling, and high availability patterns.
