Description

  • Lead architecture decisions and optical trade studies for novel optical systems across broadly defined missions.
  • Design lenses and other optical components for high-performance imaging systems.
  • Define optical performance requirements within multi-disciplinary engineering constraints.
  • Design and tolerance complex visible-to-infrared optical systems for ground and airborne applications.
  • Develop and review test setups, procedures, and data to move products from R&D into production.
  • Evaluate prototype and production optical system performance errors and determine root cause.
  • Work independently while collaborating with senior staff and leadership as the optical engineering subject matter expert.
  • Build prototypes and support their progression through ground and flight testing into final products.

Requirements

  • BS in Engineering with a concentration in Optics required.
  • MS or PhD preferred, but not required.
  • 5+ years of experience with complex opto-mechanical systems, including optical system design, analysis, alignment, and test.
  • Expertise with optical design and analysis software, preferably Zemax.
  • Experience with STOP (Structural, Thermal, and Optical Performance) analysis.
  • Knowledge of image quality metrics and data analysis methods.
  • Experience designing diffraction-limited imaging systems in dynamic environments.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Demonstrated first-principles approach to complex opto-mechanical problems is preferred.
  • Experience with optical component testing, optical system alignment and testing, and opto-electrical system modeling is preferred.
  • Experience with integration, test, and requirements verification and validation of optical systems is preferred.
  • Experience with radiometry and stray light analysis is preferred.
  • Demonstrated team leadership and mentoring experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of common optical materials, fabrication methods, and microstructures is preferred.
