Description

  • Research, design, and prototype the Universal EHR Context Protocol (UECP) to provide an agnostic patient context interface for downstream AI applications.
  • Design a unified request/response schema that abstracts variations across proprietary EHR APIs and enables context requests independent of specific EHR implementations.
  • Develop agentic fallback routing logic to detect incomplete or failed API requests and deploy secure, read-only browser-use agents to locate and extract missing context via EHR web interfaces.
  • Implement web automation and DOM navigation to open relevant unstructured clinical documents and retrieve source artifacts for extraction.
  • Build a reasoning layer using LLMs and Vision-Language Models (VLMs) to extract required clinical elements from unstructured documents and normalize them into a standard JSON/UECP schema.
  • Design and implement caching strategies and other performance optimizations to mitigate latency and balance operational tradeoffs between API retrieval and agentic fallback.
  • Establish evaluation frameworks and automated LLM evaluation pipelines (e.g., LLM-as-a-judge) to measure extraction accuracy, clinical safety, performance, and reliability.
  • Document designs and results, produce technical writing (including potential academic publication), and collaborate with senior leaders and cross-functional teams on implementation and evaluation.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Applied AI, Software Engineering, Health Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Available for a Summer 2026 internship beginning June 1, 2026 and lasting 10 weeks (until August 7, 2026); posting also notes internship durations of 3–6 months starting Summer 2026.
  • Remote (United States) availability and ability to work in a remote-first environment.
  • Strong backend software engineering skills primarily in Python, with solid foundations in data structures, system architecture, and JSON schema design.
  • Experience with web scraping, DOM manipulation, and browser automation frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium).
  • Practical experience integrating LLMs and Vision-Language Models (VLMs) for unstructured data extraction and reasoning.
  • Preferred experience or deep academic interest in agentic/autonomous frameworks and semantic routing (e.g., LangChain, AutoGPT, or custom reasoning loops).
  • Preferred knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards and EHR ecosystems (e.g., HL7 FHIR, SMART on FHIR) and familiarity with clinical coding models like Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCC).
  • Ability to evaluate and optimize system tradeoffs (latency, caching, extraction accuracy) and build automated evaluation pipelines is preferred.
  • Strong technical writing skills, high tolerance for ambiguity, and the ability to independently research, test, and architect fault-tolerant systems in fragmented software ecosystems.
