Description

  • Build scalable systems for training and fine-tuning large-scale generative models to produce realistic and challenging driving behaviors.
  • Lead the implementation and iteration of novel reinforcement learning algorithms, reward functions, and training paradigms.
  • Develop deep learning and generative AI solutions to improve human-led triaging, automate high-volume workflows, and analyze self-driving behavior for critical anomalies.
  • Oversee the production and optimization of machine learning models used to assess Waymo’s fleet of vehicles.
  • Develop a reinforcement learning from human preference (RLHF) based data collection and evaluation system.
  • Monitor and incorporate best practices from Alphabet and the broader industry to improve ML evaluation systems.
  • Collaborate with Prediction, Planning, Research, technical leads, and senior leadership across Waymo on strategic initiatives.
  • Combine expert human judgment with machine learning models to deliver training and evaluation data for metrics and components used by the Waymo Driver.

Requirements

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience developing and applying machine learning models, with a significant focus on reinforcement learning.
  • Demonstrated expertise in deep learning, sequence modeling, and generative models.
  • Strong publication record or a history of impactful project delivery in reinforcement learning or related areas.
  • Proficiency in Python and standard ML frameworks such as JAX or TensorFlow.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed training and data processing.
  • Proven ability to lead complex and ambiguous technical projects from conception to completion.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in ML/RL research and application preferred.
  • Experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or complex simulation environments preferred.
  • Deep understanding of state-of-the-art RL techniques, including fine-tuning large models from human feedback or preferences preferred.
  • Familiarity with large-scale simulation platforms and integration with ML training workflows preferred.
  • Experience designing and using metrics for evaluating complex AI systems preferred.
  • Track record of technical leadership and influencing senior stakeholders preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly preferred.

Benefits

  • £155,000–£163,000 GBP base salary range.
  • Eligibility for Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program.
