Description

  • Grow the end-to-end strategy for next-generation machine learning-based evaluation metrics with scientific and statistical rigor.
  • Architect and build scalable systems for training and fine-tuning large-scale generative models to evaluate driving behaviors.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and iteration of novel reinforcement learning algorithms, reward functions, and training paradigms.
  • Lead the development of deep learning and generative AI solutions that improve triaging, automation, and anomaly detection.
  • Develop a Reinforcement Learning from Human Preference (RLHF)-based data collection and evaluation system.
  • Monitor and incorporate best practices from Alphabet and the broader industry into evaluation and training approaches.
  • Provide technical mentorship, guidance, and thought leadership to engineers across the team and partner groups.
  • Align multiple teams, including Driver Understanding, Simulation, System Engineering, Research, and Onboard Software, around a cohesive evaluation strategy.

Requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience developing and applying machine learning models, with significant focus on reinforcement learning.
  • 2+ years of people management experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in deep learning, sequence modeling, and generative models.
  • Strong publication record or history of impactful project delivery in reinforcement learning or related areas.
  • Proficiency in Python and standard ML frameworks such as JAX or TensorFlow.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed training and data processing.
  • Proven ability to lead complex and ambiguous technical projects from conception to completion.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in ML/RL research and application, preferred.
  • Experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or complex simulation environments, preferred.
  • Deep understanding of advanced RL techniques, including fine-tuning large models from human feedback or preferences, preferred.
  • Familiarity with large-scale simulation platforms and their integration with ML training workflows, preferred.
  • Experience designing and using metrics for evaluating complex AI systems, preferred.
  • Track record of technical leadership, influencing senior stakeholders, and driving innovation across team boundaries, preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts, preferred.

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $281,000 to $356,000 USD.
  • Eligibility for Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program.
  • Eligibility for Waymo’s equity incentive plan.
  • Access to Waymo’s generous company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
