Description

  • Manage day-to-day contracting for the legal team, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of agreements.
  • Develop and improve legal policies, processes, and training related to contracting and other legal workflows.
  • Lead or support legal matters in areas such as data privacy, technology, product counseling, fundraising, nonprofit compliance, risk management, governance, labor and employment, and international law.
  • Research and advise on new and evolving laws affecting The Trevor Project and the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Liaise with the Advocacy team and other internal teams on compliance and organizational strategy.
  • Manage third-party requests for information and government investigations.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Assistant General Counsel and other legal team members on high-level compliance and risk issues.
  • Work directly with department heads and staff on legal requests and assignments.
  • Build and maintain relationships with outside law firm partners.
  • Handle matters independently or in coordination with external counsel, while escalating sensitive issues appropriately.

Requirements

  • Membership in at least one state bar in good standing and authority to practice in the applicable location.
  • 5+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, with significant experience in general advising and contract drafting and negotiation.
  • Ability to work, communicate, and collaborate effectively with legal and non-legal staff at varying seniority levels.
  • Strong project planning, problem-solving, and multitasking skills with the ability to work under tight timelines.
  • Ability to think strategically and balance legal issues with business considerations.
  • Experience working through legal aspects of novel issues and situations.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive matters with discretion and cultural awareness.
  • Strong attention to detail, thoroughness, and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • 7-10+ years of legal experience preferred.
  • Experience as in-house counsel at a nonprofit or progressive workplace preferred.
  • Experience with legal issues affecting LGBTQ+ organizations or the LGBTQ+ community preferred.
  • Experience in areas such as compliance, data privacy, product counseling, fundraising, charitable sales marketing, general risk management, government investigations, or litigation preferred.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish preferred.
  • Must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.
  • Must be able to work remotely within the continental U.S., Alaska, or Hawaii and within EST-PST time zones.
