Description

  • Design, qualify, and optimize PVD sputtering processes for SHJ front and back contacts at GW-scale volumes.
  • Lead process development for new toolsets and materials, including target management, deposition rate optimization, and defect reduction.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain improved manufacturing processes, equipment, technologies, and facilities.
  • Analyze production processes and machinery using a first-principles, physics-based approach.
  • Design experiments and apply DOE and statistical methods to diagnose and correct manufacturing problems.
  • Optimize process conditions and materials to improve the optical and electrical quality of solar cells.
  • Perform defect characterization and root-cause analysis to improve yields and develop corrective action plans.
  • Develop project plans, budgets, and cost-benefit analyses for new processes or machines.
  • Own machine activation and testing with a small team of engineers and technicians.
  • Prepare technical design review materials and drive production outcomes across yield, uptime, and cost.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years of experience in chemical engineering design, analysis, and/or system implementation; internship and extracurricular experience may count.
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, environmental science, or another STEM discipline preferred.
  • 5+ years of hands-on PVD process engineering experience, preferably in thin-film solar, semiconductor, or display manufacturing.
  • Proven experience scaling PVD processes to high-volume production (>1GW/year equivalent) preferred.
  • Strong understanding of vacuum systems, plasma physics, sputtering dynamics, and thin-film characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, and Hall effect.
  • Experience with SPC, DoE, and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment.
  • Hands-on experience with complex fluid or mechanical production systems in a professional setting.
  • Experience taking products from design to manufacturing and scaling them to high volume in cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency with data analysis/scripting tools such as Python, R, and SQL, and simulation tools such as SIMTRA for sputtering, preferred.
  • Experience with solar cell manufacturing equipment, including wet chemical processing, PE-CVD, PVD, metallization, final test, and wafer inspection equipment; evaporation and ALD experience is a plus.
  • Experience or expertise with perovskite solar cells or perovskite tandem solar cells preferred.
  • Experience with microstructure analysis and optical/electrical characterization tools such as SEM, TEM, EDX, SIMS, UV-VIS, I-V, and resistance measurements.
  • Expertise in SHJ-specific PVD processes, including low-temperature ITO deposition for bifacial cells, preferred.
