Description

  • Define and evolve Pinterest’s motion design language, including principles, patterns, timing, tokens, specifications, and guidance.
  • Lead motion direction for flagship and AI-forward experiences to clarify state, feedback, hierarchy, progress, and responsiveness.
  • Partner with product designers, engineers, product managers, researchers, and content designers on a shared motion strategy.
  • Turn high-craft motion explorations into scalable design system contributions.
  • Rapidly prototype and validate motion ideas using motion studies, design tools, code, AI-enabled tools, or custom prototypes.
  • Work closely with engineering to solve complex animation challenges while balancing performance, accessibility, and maintainability.
  • Develop tools, templates, and workflows that help designers and engineers explore and implement motion more efficiently.
  • Conduct motion quality reviews, provide feedback, and mentor designers on motion principles and systems thinking.
  • Articulate motion rationale, tradeoffs, and user impact to cross-functional partners and leadership.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in motion design, product design, interaction design, or a related discipline.
  • A portfolio demonstrating exceptional motion craft in shipped digital products or platforms.
  • Staff- or principal-level experience influencing cross-functionally without formal authority.
  • Deep knowledge of motion and interaction design principles, including timing, choreography, easing, spring behavior, feedback, and transitions.
  • Experience creating or evolving scalable motion systems, such as principles, token sets, pattern libraries, documentation, tooling, and governance.
  • Experience partnering closely with engineers to implement complex motion and handle technical constraints, performance, platform conventions, handoff, and QA.
  • Comfort using prototyping tools, AI, and code or technical workflows to explore and communicate ideas.
  • Strong product and systems thinking with awareness of accessibility and implementation efficiency.
  • Excellent communication, storytelling, documentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in design, animation, HCI, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: experience defining motion for AI, conversational, multimodal, or emerging product experiences.
  • Preferred: experience contributing to platform-wide design systems, public motion systems, or open-source animation libraries.
  • Preferred: experience building tools that improve motion prototyping, handoff, or implementation.
  • Preferred: experience in large-scale consumer products, personalization, or rapid experimentation environments.

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $158,765 to $326,870 USD for US-based applicants.
  • Eligible for equity.
  • Remote-friendly role with in-office collaboration required only 1-2 times every 6 months.
  • Position can be situated anywhere in the country.
