Description

  • Serve as the HFE lead for the contract, owning HFE strategy, roadmap, quality bar, governance, definitions of ready/done, templates, and review gates.
  • Translate state-of-the-art human factors, cognitive/organizational psychology, and clinical informatics research into scalable methods, guidance, and team practices.
  • Champion SAFe® Lean-Agile principles and shape ART ceremonies (PI Planning, System Demo, Inspect & Adapt) to drive value delivery and continuous improvement.
  • Plan and execute mixed-methods research and usability evaluations (contextual inquiry, cognitive task analysis, diary studies, think-aloud, surveys, card sorting, tree testing, formative/summative testing) tailored to risk and regulatory context.
  • Design and conduct workflow analyses across clinical informatics domains (order entry, medication administration, care coordination, documentation, decision support) to identify latent conditions, handoff risks, and transient failure modes.
  • Apply advanced risk and resilience methods (e.g., FMEA/FMECA, STPA, bow-tie analysis, FRAM, HFACS) to anticipate and mitigate human-system hazards.
  • Visualize and articulate system-wide impacts of design changes for all user groups and recommend redesigns or operational mitigations when constraints exist.
  • Collaborate with product, engineering, clinical SMEs, and data teams to prototype (low- to high-fidelity) and evaluate effects on safety, workflow, workload, and adoption.
  • Provide actionable feedback during live demos and user sessions, adapt in real time to participant input, and mentor cross-functional teams through trainings and brown-bag sessions.
  • Define and track HFE KPIs (e.g., task success, time-on-task, error rates, cognitive load, adoption, defect escape rate, alert fatigue) and produce standards-aligned HFE documentation and reports.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in human factors, human-centered design, cognitive/organizational psychology, engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in human factors engineering with a strong record leading research, evaluations, and design for complex, safety-critical or high-reliability systems.
  • Experience applying SAFe® Lean-Agile principles and practices to drive value, sustain organizational change, and enable high-performing Agile teams.
  • Experience planning and conducting mixed-methods research and usability testing (contextual inquiry, cognitive task analysis, think-aloud protocols, surveys, tree testing, formative/summative usability).
  • Experience performing workflow analyses across clinical informatics domains (order entry, medication administration, care coordination, documentation, decision support).
  • Familiarity with advanced risk and resilience analysis methods (FMEA/FMECA, STPA, bow-tie analysis, FRAM, HFACS).
  • Experience prototyping and evaluating designs (low- to high-fidelity) and assessing effects on safety, workflow, workload, and adoption.
  • Experience defining and tracking HFE KPIs and producing standards-aligned documentation (protocols, test plans, risk analyses, traceability matrices, usability engineering files, summative reports).
  • Experience mentoring teams and delivering trainings to enable HFE practices within cross-functional Agile teams.
