Description

  • Design computational material science problems that can challenge a frontier AI model and produce answers verifiable by code.
  • Anchor each problem in a specialized tool such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, GeoPandas, or similar software.
  • Write Python reference solutions and provide any required input files, model definitions, or domain setup.
  • Define the correct numerical answer and set an appropriate domain-specific tolerance for judging model outputs.
  • Test and calibrate tasks against batches of parallel model attempts to achieve a target pass rate of roughly 10–30%.
  • Revise waveform scenarios, inversion settings, and solver tolerances to tune task difficulty and behavior.
  • Submit finalized tasks for senior review and incorporate feedback to improve task quality.
  • Work within sealed Linux container environments where a programmatic judge evaluates model responses.

Requirements

  • Degree in Material Science or a related field.
  • 2+ years of research, applied, or teaching experience.
  • Python proficiency for writing reference solutions.
  • Fluency with, or strong willingness to independently learn, at least one scriptable package such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, xmitgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, or GeoPandas.
  • Ability to design problems that genuinely require a specialized solver.
  • Strong written English at C1 level or higher.
  • Availability for part-time, non-permanent project work.
  • Willingness to learn independently and get up to speed without prior experience in the listed tools.
  • Experience in material science, geophysics, oceanographic, or sub-surface flow problems is advantageous.
  • Comfort working on tasks that require careful calibration and iterative problem tuning.
